Polish Wool

Honeycomb Knits currently offers yarn and wool products in two types of Polish wool.

Polish Mountain Sheep Wool

Polish Mountain Sheep wool is a hardy, durable wool that comes from the fleeces of sheep bred and raised on the foothills of the Tatras mountains, also known as the Podhale region. Their wool is long and tough, built for protection in the harsh climate of winter in the mountains. The diameter of each fibre is greater than 28 microns, which is the threshold in which humans can generally feel the individual fibres. Therefore, it is not very soft to the touch and is more suitable for household accessories or outerwear. Traditional Highlander clothing from this region uses wool for pants and hats. Many flocks in the region are grazed in a rotating method, which slows degradation of soil and spreads out natural fertilisation of fields. Honeycomb Knits currently uses undyed wool from the Polish mountain sheep, which cuts down on water usage and avoids chemical use.

Polish Merino Wool

The second type of wool Honeycomb Knits offers is merino wool. This comes from merino sheep bread in central Poland, where the land is more flat and the winter weather not as harsh. This wool is more delicate and softer to the touch. The diameter of the each fibre is less than 28 microns, therefore, this wool does not have the ‘itch’ factor associated with Polish Mountain Sheep Wool. Honeycomb Knits currently uses undyed merino wool, which cuts down on water usage and avoids chemical use.
